    European Union Health Commissioner Marcos Kyprianou said here today that road accidents related to alcohol are a major cause of concern in Cyprus and in the EU in general.

    Speaking to CNA, Kyprianou said the problems caused by excessive consumption of alcohol in Cyprus is connected mainly with road accidents.

    According to available figures, about one accident in four can be linked to alcohol consumption, and at least 10.000 people are killed in alcohol-related road accidents in the EU each year.

    [02] QATAR OPEN - BAGHDATIS

    Cypriot tennis player Marcos Baghdatis won Wednesday with 2-0 set Spanish Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo in the framework of the second round of the Qatar tennis tournament.

    Baghdatis, seeded 12th in the world ranking, and 3rd in the Qatar open, beat Hidalgo, 57 - seeded in the world ranking with 6 - 2 and 6 0 set.

    The Cypriot tennis player will play against Swedish Robin Sonderling, 25 seeded in the world ranking and 6th seeded in the Qatar open.
