  • [01] CYPRUS - UNDP - REPRESENTATIONS

The government will make strong representations to the UN and the European Union over a decision by the department Partnership for Peace UNDP-PFF of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), stationed in the free areas of the Republic, to move its offices to the Turkish occupied north of Cyprus.

Answering questions on the issue, Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardis said it is a fact that part of the UNDP offices is moving to the occupied areas, without asking the consent of Cyprus, as the host country, and as required by the conditions of operation.

Already, the government is making strong representations to the UN, he added.

To a remark that the Partnership for Peace Programme belongs to the EU, the Spokesman said that representations will also be made to the EU.

    [02] US - OIL DISPUTE

US State Department Spokesman Sean McCormack has urged Turkey and Cyprus to refrain from any actions that might be misinterpreted by the other side, saying there must be full transparency in order to avoid misunderstandings that might result in mishaps.

Responding to questions Thursday at the daily briefing on reports that Turkey had increased its naval military presence in Cyprus in connection to the Republics exploration rights, McCormack said that ultimately what needs to happen is the parties should get back to the root causes of the dispute, meaning the Cyprus problem.
