Deputy Executive Director of the Fundraising and Communications
Department at the World Food Programme (WFP) John Powell has thanked
Cyprus and its people for their contribution in the success of the
humanitarian mission to face the Lebanon crisis, as well as the
constant support to specific programmes of the Organization.
Powell met here Wednesday with the President of the Parliamentary
Committee of Foreign Affairs Averof Neofytou and members of the
Committee and with the President of Parliamentary Committee of Human
Rights Sophocles Fyttis.
[02] CYPRIOT MEP - PALESTINIANS
Cypriot member of the European Parliament Kyriakos Triantafyllides of
AKEL has been elected unanimously Chairman of the Delegation of the
European Parliament for relations with the Palestinian Legislative
Council.
His term in office will cover the period until June 2009, when European
Parliament elections will take place.
Triantafillides will head the delegation of the European Parliamant
that will travel to the Palestinian Territories and Israel at the
beginning of May.
Speaking during yesterdays session, Triantafyllides welcomed the set up
of a new Palestinian government of national unity, underlining that it
is a product of difficult negotiations, which started with the
Agreement of Mekka on February 8, 2007 and asked the EU to proceed with
its recognition.
