[01] LILLIKAS - TURKEY - EUCypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Lillikas said on Tuesday that the opening of two new chapters in Turkey`s EU accession negotiations was a clear political message to Turkey that ``we are not closing the door on the prospect and dialogue between the EU and Turkey but the process could not be independent and not take into consideration the whole behaviour and political positions of Turkey.``Lillikas said Cyprus has supported Turkey`s accession course in that Ankara must fulfill its obligations in order to join the EU and these obligations serve Cyprus` strategic aim, namely the reunification of the island. Commenting on remarks by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan that the year 2008 will be more productive for Cyprus, Lillikas pointed out that in order for this to happen there must be an expression of good will from the Turkish side, not only the Cypriot government. He added that the Cyprus settlement must be a compromise and not the enforcement of the interests of one side on the other. [02] PAPADOPOULOS - LABOUR OFFICECypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos, inaugurating on Tuesday the Local Labour Office in Lakatamia, said "the government is investing over five million Cyprus pounds in reorganising and modernising the Labour Offices, through the Human Resources Programme, which is partly funded by the EU."In his speech, President Papadopoulos said the Lakatamia Office is the first of 14 such Labour Offices scheduled to open by the end of 2007, on a local and regional level. He added that queues would be something of the past and unemployed persons would be registered through a computerised system, would be entitled to a personal interview for an assessment of qualifications and expertise, and would receive information on available employment opportunities. [03] KEVE - EUROLocal business is preparing in earnest to welcome the euro on 1st January 2008, as Cyprus is gearing itself to the big change in its currency, a move that has been described as a landmark.Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KEVE) President Manthos Mavrommatis said in an interview with CNA that KEVE continues its information campaign about the euro and it is now trying to ensure that businesses will not exploit consumers through an unjustified increase in prices during the changeover from the Cyprus pound to the euro. On the economic situation in Cyprus, three years after its accession to the EU, Mavrommatis noted that there is no doubt that Cyprus accession to the EU has brought various benefits in all fields, including financial benefits.
