  • [01] FM - SYRIA - ILLEGAL SEA ROUTES

Cyprus Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis has said that dialogue between Cyprus and Syria is still going on as regards the sea routes from the Turkish occupied port of Famagusta to Syria, adding that there is still room for diplomatic interventions with a view to solve this problem.

We are certainly not satisfied and we express our regret over this development but dialogue and diplomatic actions towards Syria continue, she added, noting that UN resolutions and the international law must prevail.

Marcoullis also said it was important that the Government of Georgia, decided, following intensive interventions by the Cyprus Government, to remove from its register the Turkish ship flying a Georgian flag, which sailed Thursday from the closed port of Famagusta for Latakia

    [02] MORPHOU - ANTI-OCCUPATIONAL MARCH

Cyprus House President Demetris Christofias stressed that the unacceptable stance of Turkey as regards the Cyprus problem must not lead us to passivity and idleness but must reinforce our will to exercise an assertive diplomatic policy.

In a speech at the 27th Morphou anti-occupation march, Christofias said that Turkeys stance on Cyprus must also reinforce our will to undertake continuous, targeted and well organized initiatives that will disclose Turkeys intransigence and will create the preconditions to exert pressure on the occupation force to cooperate for a settlement that will be for the benefit of our people.

Otherwise, its intransigence must have a cost. This is a hard task but not an impossible one. It can be achieved with explicit positions, with consistency in principles, assertion and flexibility, Christofias added.

[03] DEFENCE MINISTER - NIKIFOROS MANOEUVRE

Cyprus National Guard remains a modern, strong, flexible and deterrent force, Cyprus Defence Minister Christodoulos Pashiardes said Saturday, after watching the last and main phase of Nikiforos military manoeuvre, held October 9-14.

Pashiardes notd that the success of the manoeuvre showed once again the high level of fighting and operational effectiveness of the National Guard, which was and remains a modern, strong, flexible and deterrent force.

[04] JUSTICE MINISTER - GREECE - OFFICIAL VISIT

Cyprus Justice and Public Order Minister Sophocles Sophocleous leaves Sunday, October 14, for Athens, where he will pay an official visit at the invitation of the Greek Minister of the Interior Prokopis Pavlopoulos.

An official press release said that Sophocleous and Pavlopoulos will hold official talks on issues of mutual interest, as the upgrading of the Agreement for Police Cooperation between Greece and Cyprus, aiming at its adjustment to the acquis communautaire, the training of the members of the police force of both countries and the cooperation between their Fire Services, in the framework of an existing interstate agreement.
