[02] AUSTRALIA - CMP - DONATION
The Australian Government will donate 10,000 Australian dollars to the
Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) in Cyprus, as a contribution to the
CMP project on the exhumation, identification and return of remains of
missing persons, which was launched in August 2006, CMP announced
today. The Australian Special Envoy for Cyprus, Jim Short, advised the
CMP of the grant during his visit today to the CMP Anthropological
laboratory in the United Nations Protected Area in Nicosia.
Commending the work of the CMP, Short said ``that the grant was made on
humanitarian grounds and to assist reconciliation efforts in Cyprus.``
The CMP expressed its gratitude to the Australian Government for its
generosity, which will help its bi-communal teams of scientists to
continue their work throughout the island on behalf of the families of
missing from both communities.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied 37
per cent of its territory. The CMP comprises three members, one from
each community and a UN appointed official.
