  • [01] NICOSIA SYRIA

Nicosia has said it was pleased with assurances Damascus has given that it will sort out very soon an issue relating to an illegal sea route from Turkish occupied Cyprus to Syria.

Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos expressed Monday satisfaction over the assurances given to Cyprus Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis by the President of Syria Bashar Al Assad, regarding the issue which arose with the illegal sea routes between Latakia, Syria, and the Turkish occupied port of Famagusta,

The assurances that we have received satisfy us, Papadopoulos said, invited to comment on Assads assurance to Marcoullis that the issue will be settled very soon.

Papadopoulos said that from the beginning Syria had explained to us the reasons these arrangements were made on a private level and said that the position of the Syrian government is that this illegality must be lifted in the way Damascus feels that it can be achieved in the best way for both countries.

Famagusta has been declared by the government of Cyprus a closed port following the 1974 Turkish invasion of the island.

The UN has branded the illegal regime in occupied Cyprus legally invalid and called on all states not to recognise or facilitate it in any way.

    [02] FINANCE MINISTER ECOFIN

Cyprus Finance Minister Michalis Sarris left for Brussels to attend a meeting of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN), on November 13.

The meeting will discuss, among other issues, the new three-year cycle of the Lisbon Strategy, as regards globalisation the capital and labour flows and in particular the report by the Commission on migration and as regards the Statistics the 2007 Status Report, the Reduction of the Statistical Burden and the EU Statistical Governance.

    [03] NORWAY - CYPRUS - EEA GRANTS

A delegation of the Norwegian EEA Financial Mechanism is on the island to monitor the spending of Norwegian funds given to Cyprus as part of the European Economic Area Agreement.

Á meeting on this issue was held at the Planning Bureau between the Norwegian delegation and a Cypriot delegation headed by its Director-General Andreas Moleskis. It was decided that a total of 4.7 million euro will be allocated to Cyprus.

Ambassador Ingrid Schulerud, of the EEA Grants, told CNA that I come from the Donors, and every year we have a meeting with the Planning Bureau on the spending of the Norwegian funds in Cyprus.

[04] UNIVERSITY OF CYPRUS UNICA ZENIOS

Rector of the University of Cyprus Stavros A. Zenios was elected President of the Network of the Universities from the Capitals of Europe (UNICA), during the General Assembly held at the Lomonosov Moscow State University in Moscow from 8-10 November.

A University of Cyprus press release issued here Monday said the Rector of the University of Cyprus assumes the presidency of UNICA from 1 January 2008 for a three-year period from current President and Vice-Rector of the Vienna University Arthur Mettinger.

In statements, Zenios said his election is an honour for the University of Cyprus which is continuously gaining the appreciation of its European partners as a top educational centre, with international standards that can play a leading role among European universities.
