[01] PRESIDENT - RYAN - TALKS
Britain believes that Cypriots must agree on a political settlement for
their country, on the basis of a bizonal bicommunal federation, in a
reunited Cyprus Londons special representative for Cyprus Joan Ryan has
said. She also said that Britain is willing to accept its
responsibility as a guarantor power of Cyprus independence and
territorial integrity and noted that the current atmosphere on the
island is significantly different to what it was in October last year.
Speaking after a meeting with Ryan here today, Cyprus President
Demetris Christofias said he expects Britain to be consistent with the
principles of a settlement. I hope there will be consistency from all
parties, our side, Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat and Turkey,
he added. Asked about his meeting with Ryan, he said we expect that
Britain will play the positive role which we want it to play. Replying
to questions, he said that he has known Ryan, a Labour party deputy,
for a long time and has met her on different occasions.
In her remarks, Ryan said she had a very positive and constructive
meeting with the President and his Commissioner George Iacovou. I think
the atmosphere here is significantly different to the last time I was
here as a special representative which was October. There is a much
more positive feel, she added. She congratulated Christofias on his
election last February to the presidency and on his very positive
approach, peace talking and the work he is doing with the leader of
Turkish Cypriot community to seek reunification of this island.
[02] CYPRUS - DUST
A high concentration of particles in the atmosphere that can be inhaled
was recorded on Tuesday in Cyprus. According to official measurements,
the particle concentration was between 107 and 253 micrograms per cubic
metre (mg/m3) and thus the average 24-hour reading will exceed the
respective 50mg/m3 limit that has been set by relevant legislation.
Due to the small size of the particles and the possible adverse effects
on human health, the public and especially the vulnerable groups of the
population, such as children, patients and the elderly, are urged to
avoid open spaces until the phenomenon recedes. Furthermore, workers in
open spaces should use the appropriate personal safety measures, and
workers who believe the conditions might aggravate their health by the
increased concentration of dust should consult their doctor.
At 0700 local time, the concentration was between 133 and 220mg/m3. In
the capital Nicosia at the same time the average was 170mg/m3, in the
southern coastal town of Limassol 197mg/m3, Larnaca, on the southeast,
221mg/m3, Paphos, on the west, 104mg/m3 and Ayia Marina Xyliatou, in
the lower mountainous areas, 133mg/m3.
