  • [01] SARKOZY - CHRISTOFIAS - PARIS

French President Nicolas Sarkozy is expected to extend an invitation to the Cypriot President, the Turkish Prime Minister and the UN Secretary General to visit Paris in July to participate in the summit of the Union of the Mediterranean.

According French government sources, the invitation comes in connection with the summit, to be held on July 13th in Paris, between the European Union and third countries of the Mediterranean basin.

France, which will assume the EU six-monthly rotating Presidency in July, is expecting to examine progress in the bicommunal meetings between the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities, aiming at reunifying Cyprus divided since the Turkish invasion of 1974.

Paris has indicated that if and when invited, it would be ready to contribute to efforts towards a Cyprus solution.

The same sources have not ruled out the possibility that UNSG Ban Ki-moon will hold in Paris separate meetings with Cypriot President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the Cyprus question.

The French President, who in July will also preside over the UNSC, will invite to Paris EU leaders, leaders of third countries of the Mediterranean, the UNSG and the General Secretary of the Arab League.

According to the same sources, Sarkozy hopes that everybody will be able to participate in the summit, which aims to define the details of the French Presidents idea to create a Union for the Mediterranean.

The Union for the Mediterranean, which will include the EU and third countries of the Mediterranean basin, aims at overcoming problems which have occurred during the Barcelona Process.

Sarkozys idea for a Union for the Mediterranean provides for an agreement to be reached in Paris on July 13th, according to which EU members and third countries of the Mediterranean basin will begin a more concrete cooperation.

According to CNA sources, the first project which will most probably be adopted will be the de-pollution of the Mediterranean Sea.

Other projects include the use of solar energy and the construction of road networks.

    [02] KYPRIANOU BRUSSELS GULF

Minister of Foreign Affairs Markos Kyprianou has expressed the hope that the meetings he is expected to have in Brussels with his Arab counterparts will mark the start of enhanced bilateral relations with the Gulf states.

Speaking at Larnaca airport, on departure for Brussels to participate in the General Affairs and External Relations Council (GAERC) the Minister said that EU Foreign Ministers are set to discuss issues relating to WTO/DDA, Africa (Somalia, Zimbabwe), Georgia and the situation in Lebanon.

He further said that he will also have the opportunity to meet counterparts from countries of the Gulf.

It is a significant meeting because our policy is to warm up and strengthen our relations with the Arab countries, the Minister said, noting that Cyprus is facing problems at the Organisation of Islamic Conference and Turkeys moves and initiatives in the region.

Kyprianou will then travel to Algeria where he will meet his counterpart and government officials. It is a friendly country. Algeria is especially important for us as a member of the Arab League and the OIC», the FM said.

    [03] SPEED CAMERAS - MINISTER

Minister of Communications and Works Nicos Nicolaides said that the plan to install the new speed camera system could be implemented six to eight months from the day the Council of Ministers gives the go ahead.

Nicolaides said his Ministry would bring the issue before the Council of Ministers once again and that, according to the proposal, the complete system includes the installation of 400 permanent and mobile cameras across the island in three stages.
