    Secretary-General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alexander Downer had here today a series of meetings on Cyprus issue.

    According to UN sources, Downer, who is visiting Cyprus for the first time, had informative contacts with UN Secretary General`s Special Representative in Cyprus Tayie Brook Zerihoun and other UN officials during which they reviewed latest developments on Cyprus in view of the upcoming direct talks between the Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat.

    President Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Talat decided after their meeting in Nicosia on Friday 25 to start direct negotiations on September 3 under UN auspices aimed at the reunification of Cyprus

    On Tuesday, Downer will hold meetings with President Christofias and T/C leader and their aides, George Iacovou and Ozdil Nami, as well as with the Ambassadors of the five Permanent Members States of the UN Security Council.

    [02] PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS EDUCATIONAL REFORM

    Cyprus President Demetris Christofias has stressed the need for speeding up the implementation of the Educational Reform which the new government has pledged to expand and deepen.

    The President was speaking at a meeting of the Council of Education held under his chairmanship and in the presence of the Minister of Education and Culture Andreas Demetriou during which the members of the Council discussed the goals of the upcoming school year.

    Among these goals are the creation of a peaceful coexistence and a mutual respect and cooperation culture between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots aiming at ending the Turkish occupation and reunifying Cyprus and its people.

    Christofias noted that the meeting is marking the resumption of the structured and systematic dialogue being conducted in institutionalized Councils on Educational Reform

    [03] MINISTER OF THE INTERIOR ARTEMIDA

    The rebuilding of Artemida community in Greece, which was badly hit during last summers catastrophic forest fires, will be concluded on May 2009. The major project, which includes the complete rebuilding of the destroyed houses, has begun three days ago. In addition, in a few days time, the works for the reconstruction of the village main square will begin. These works are estimated to be concluded by early autumn.

    Speaking after a meeting of the Cyprus ministerial committee for the rebuilding of Artemida, Minister of the Interior Neoklis Sylikiotis, reassured that the rebuilding of Artemida will be concluded within the time frames.

    Sylikiotis also noted that the cost of rebuilding the Greek village is estimated to reach 10.2 million euro. The Republic of Cyprus has also compensated with 3.3 million euro, the farmers and the stock breeders, for their losses. Sylikiotis will visit Artemida next autumn.

    [04] LEBANESE COMMUNIST PARTY - MEETINGS

    Lebanese Communist Party (LCP) Secretary General Khaled Hadadah has expressed the hope that a Cyprus settlement will be reached, that will serve the interests of both communities. Hadadah made statements to the press after a meeting, which a delegation of his party had with a delegation of Cyprus left wing party AKEL.

    The two parties expressed their readiness to enhance their relations, AKEL parliamentary spokesman Nicos Katsourides said after the meeting. Katsourides said that they briefed the LCP delegation on the situation in the Cyprus question and the situation in Cyprus in general and the role, which AKEL is playing, while the LCP delegation briefed AKEL on the situation in Lebanon.

    On his part Hadadah thanked AKEL for his policy on Lebanon and added that the Cypriot and the Lebanese peoples have very much in common as they both suffer by the foreign invasions, either of Turkey in Cyprus, or of Israel in Lebanon.

    The LCP delegation was also received by Cyprus President Demetris Christofias.
