President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali
Talat are meeting on Tuesday in the context of the UN-led talks, and
are expected to discuss external relations.
Present at the meeting will be UN Secretary Generals Special Adviser on
Cyprus Alexander Downer and Secretary Generals Special Representative
in Cyprus Taye Brook Zerihoun.
At their last meeting on December 2, the two leaders discussed matters
relating to the civil service and the civil service commission, on
which they shared some views and disagreed on others.
President Christofias and Talat have been engaged in direct
negotiations since early September this year, aiming at reuniting the
island, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.
[02] CYPRUS - CHANUKAH CELEBRATIONS
The Jewish holiday of Chanukah will be celebrated this year in Cyprus
with grandeur, according to the Cyprus Jewish Community Centre, which
said that 4,5 meter tall Menorahs will be erected and a special
celebration will be held in the coastal town of Larnaca.
A press release issued by the Cyprus Jewish Community Centre said that
the Cyprus Chanukah celebrations will receive a significant boost this
year as a special celebration with local dignitaries participating,
will beheld on Sunday, 21 December.
Cypriot municipalities have approved the request, put forth by longtime
local resident and Rabbi of Cyprus, Rabbi Arie Zeev Raskin of the
Cyprus Jewish Community Centre. He said Chanukahs a time for
celebrating the freedom to openly celebrate our shared values; this
Memorah proclaims that message to the world, adding we appreciate the
towns eagerness to bring the universal message of Chanukah to the
citizens.
