Greeces Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyiannis has said that her countrys support to Turkeys European aspirations cannot be unconditional and it is up to Turkey to honour its commitments.

Addressing an event entitled Collective Security in the 21st Century: Building New Bridges hosted by the Center on the United States and Europe (CUSE) at Brookings Institution in Washington, Bakoyannis, who is also the chairperson-in-office at the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE ) spoke about the tasks facing the organization.

She said that Greece wholeheartedly supports Turkeys EU prospects but pointed out that our support to Turkey was offered under the same conditions and principles which apply for every candidate state. It is the same procedure that is still valid and the same one that Greece went through too.

Connected with (Turkeys) EU prospects is the continued occupation of Cyprus. A fair, long-lasting and functional solution for the reunification of the island after 35 years of occupation is long overdue, Bakoyiannis underlined.

She welcomed the new efforts for a Cyprus settlement underway that began in September 2008.

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat meet in the framework of the UN-led direct negotiations, which began last September with a view to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem and reunify the island, divided since the Turkish invasion of 1974.

We hope that this new effort will reach to an agreed settlement that will finally reunite the island and allow the two communities live side by side and prosper, she added.

Bakoyiannis, is on a three-day visit to Washington, her first since US President Barack Obama was sworn into office. On Tuesday, Bakoyannis is scheduled to meet the chairman and members of the US Commission for Security and Co-operation in Europe (CSCE), also known as the Helsinki Commission.

The Minister`s other engagements on the same day include a meeting with the chairman and members of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and the US House Committee on Foreign Affairs, while she will be received at the White House by Obama`s national security adviser, Gen. James Jones.

On Wednesday, Bakoyannis is to meet US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for talks expected to focus on bilateral relations, OSCE issues, the situation in the Middle East and the Caucasus, developments in the Balkans, relations with Turkey and the Cyprus issue.

Toward the end of the week, the Greek Foreign Minister will visit New York.

    [02] CYPRUS PRESIDENT - SERBIA

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias concludes on Tuesday his two-day state visit to Serbia.

President Christofias and Serbian PM Mirko Cvetkovic will address today the Cyprus - Serbia business forum organised by the Serbian Chamber of Commerce in the presence of businesspeople from Serbia as well as a delegation of the Cypriot Chamber of Commerce and Industry headed by its President Manthos Mavrommatis.

Later on President Christofias will give a lecture on the future of the Cypriot-Serbian relations at the faculty of Political Science of the University of Belgrade.

Furthermore, Cyprus Minister of Foreign Affairs Marcos Kyprianou will meet his Serbian counterpart Vuk Jeremic, while Cypriot Minister of Commerce Industry and Tourism Antonis Paschalides will have separate meetings with Serbian Minister of Trade and Services Slobodan Milosavljevich and with Deputy PM and Minister for the Economy and Regional Development Mladjan Dinkich

[03] CoR PRESIDENT - EU - LOCAL AND REGIONAL AUTHORITIES

President of the EU Committee of Regions (CoR), Luc Van den Brande, has stressed the role of Local and Regional Authorities in creating a strong and efficient European Union.

Speaking on Monday during an event titled The Committee of Regions brings EU closer to the citizens, organized by the Democratic Rally Party (DISY), Van den Brande said that in the 21st century, the European Union can become a point of reference of economic and political stability, noting that it can also become the leader of the world economic scene and a common place of justice and security.

Van den Brande noted that there is a gap between the achievements of the European Union and the citizens perception about the EU utility and value. I believe that this misunderstanding comes from the lack of a political perception towards the EU, which is mainly considered as technical or a diplomatic Organisation, and not as a political arena, similar to those that already exist at national and local level, he said.

[04] CYPRUS - INTERNATIONAL MONTH OF FRANCOPHONIE

Cyprus will celebrate in March the International Month of Francophonie, which will include various events, ranging from theatre, music, cinema, to literature, competitions and gastronomy.

The programme of the International Month of Francophonie was presented Tuesday by Minister of Education and Culture Andreas Demetriou and French Ambassador in Nicosia Nicolas Galey.

The Minister said that Cyprus participates actively in the events co-organised by the government and the countries members of the International Organisation of the Francophonie.
