Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyiannis has briefed US officials on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem, stressing the need for the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus to reach a decision on the solution of the problem, without any foreign interference.

Bakoyiannis is on a visit to Washington, where she is having a series of meetings with Administration officials. On Tuesday, she met National Security Advisor of the US President, General James Jones, Senator Robert Durbin, Senator Benjamin Cardin, members of the US Commission for Security and Co-operation in Europe (CSCE), known as the Helsinki Commission, and Chairman John Kerry and members of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.

According to reliable diplomatic sources, Bakoyiannis referred to the ongoing direct negotiation process between Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, noting that the two leaders should be let free, especially from Turkey and the Turkish military, to decide on the solution.
