[02] CYPRUS CERN - APPLICATION
[01] EU OFFICIAL CYPRUS TURKEY
Director of the EU Enlargement Directorate Michael Leigh has referred
the issue of Turkey`s provocative behaviour against the sovereign
rights of the Republic of Cyprus concerning explorations for oil
deposits to the authority for the peaceful settlement of border
disputes, which provides inter alia a form of international
arbitration.
Speaking at a press conference in London on Friday, Leigh was asked how
it was possible for the Republic of Cyprus to accept the opening of the
chapter on energy in Turkey`s EU accession negotiations in the light of
Turkey`s provocations regarding explorations in Cyprus` exclusive
economic zone.
Leigh noted that in the context of accession negotiations, it was clear
than any differences in determining borders should be settled between
the sides directly involved, adding that, if they fail to do so, they
should appeal to a form of international arbitration, without resolving
to violence. He added that as long as Turkey did not fulfill its
obligations emanating from the Ankara Protocol to include Cyprus, by
opening its ports and airports to Cypriot ships and airplanes, the
eight chapters that have been inactivated would not open.
Leigh also noted that accession negotiations were carried out between
the candidate country and the EU members, and thus each chapter needed
the approval of all member states. He also welcomed the direct
negotiations between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus for a
comprehensive settlement, and expressed hope that they would lead to a
positive outcome.
[02] CYPRUS CERN - APPLICATION
Minister of Education and Culture Andreas Demetriou has submitted an
application for the accession of the Republic of Cyprus to the European
Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN).
Demetriou, who paid an official visit to Switzerland, visited CERN in
Geneva, accompanied by Chairman of the Cyprus Institute professor
Costas Papanicholas, and submitted the application on behalf of the
Republic of Cyprus.
The application is part of the dossier for the full participation of
Cyprus in CERN, which will enable the Republic to become a full member
of CERN in the largest physics scientific laboratory in the world.
