    President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias held a two-hour meeting on Tuesday with Fidel Castro at his residence in the Cuban capital.

    An official statement said that President Christofias went to Castros residence, accompanied by his wife Elsie and Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou.

    During Christofias three-day official visit to Cuba, five cooperation agreements and three memoranda of understanding between the two countries were signed.

    Kyprianou and Bruno Rodriguez Parilla, Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment, signed an agreement which promotes the development of cooperation relations in relevant sectors of economic and social development as well as establishing an intergovernmental joint commission.

    A Memorandum of Understanding for Agriculture Cooperation was signed between Kyprianou and Cuban Agriculture Minister Ulises Rosales del Toro. The Memorandum promotes scientific and technical cooperation in agriculture and also sets out cooperation programmes for the implementation of the Memorandum.

    The Memorandum of Understanding on energy was signed between Minister of Basic Industries of Cuba Yadira Garcia Vera and Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Antonis Pashalides. The Memorandum establishes cooperation on energy, renewable energy, oil and gas between the two countries.

    The cooperation Agreement between the Ministry of Education and Culture of Cyprus and the Ministry of Culture of Cuba was signed by Foreign Minister Kyprianou and the Minister of Culture of Cuba. It establishes cooperation in cultural policies.

    The cooperation agreement on Tourism was signed between Minister of Commerce Antonis Pashalides and Minister of Tourism of Cuba Manuel Marrero Cruz. The agreement promotes and encourages the development of tourism between the two countries and intensifies relations of cooperation and trade between their tourist organisations for the purpose of increasing the bilateral exchanges in this area.

    The cooperation agreement between the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment of Cuba and the Bureau of Planning and Development of Cyprus was signed by Foreign Minister Kyprianou and the Minister of Science of Cuba.

    This instrument encourages the cooperation in research and development on the basis of mutual benefits for the two countries. The cooperation agreement in the field of Sports between the Cuban Institute of Sports and Physical Culture and the Sports Organisation of the Republic of Cyprus, signed by Kyprianou and Julio Christian Jimenez Molina President of the National Sport Institute, provides for developing and promoting technical cooperation and exchanges in sport for the further development of sports in both countries.

    The Memorandum of Understanding that was signed by Foreign Minister Kyprianou and Jose Ramon Fernandez, President of Cuban Olympic Committee also Vice President of the Cuban Council of Ministers, provides for sport cooperation between the Olympic Committees of the two countries.

    President Christofias and his entourage concluded their visit to Cuba and are returning home Wednesday evening.
