  • [01] EU COMMISSIONER - MULTILINGUALISM

EU Commissioner for Multilingualism, Leonard Orban, is in Cyprus on a two-day official visit during which he will meet Education and Culture Minister Andreas Demetriou and the House Standing Education Committee.

Commissioner Orban will meet a group of students of Romanian origin and will declare the opening of an educational programme entitled Modern languages and European studies at the University of Cyprus and will take part in an open discussion on multilingualism.

The aim of the Commissioners visit is to inform the people of Cyprus on the EU policy on multilingualism. This policy is proving not only to have positive effect on the economy but also on the labour market and social cohesion as well as building bonds between peoples and cultures.

[02] FOREIGN MINISTER - EU MEETINGS

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Markos Kyprianou, will take part in the General Affairs and External Relations Council of the European Union, from 2627 October, in Luxembourg. During the Council, the EU Ministers will prepare the upcoming EU summit and are expected to adopt conclusions on the EU Baltic Sea Strategy.

Points of the foreign policy agenda include an action plan for stronger EU action in Afghanistan and Pakistan and the situation in Sri Lanka. The Foreign Affairs Ministers are expected to discuss the Western Balkans, with special focus on the transition to a stronger EU presence in Bosnia. The EU approach to Iran and the peace process in the Middle East will be also discussed.

Minister Kyprianou will then travel to Brussels to participate in the meeting of the European Council, which will take place on 29-30 October. The European Council is expected to focus on institutional issues, involving completing the required preparations ahead of the entry into force of the Treaty of Lisbon, as well as issues regarding climate change, irregular immigration and the EU Baltic Sea Strategy.

    [03] BAGHDATIS - STOCKHOLM OPEN - WINNER

Cypriot tennis player Marcos Baghdatis has won the third ATP title of his career on Sunday with a 6-1 and 7-5 victory over Belgian Olivier Rochus, in the Stockholm Open final. The Cypriot, who had slipped to 66 in the ATP rankings, outplayed Rochus in the first set and then survived a fight back from the Belgian in the second.

Baghdatis came back from 4-2 down and eventually broke Rochus to 6-5. He went on to grab two match points with a fine backhand down the line and then wrapped up the match with an ace.

``It`s a great feeling and I`m so happy,`` Baghdatis said in an on-court interview. ``It`s been a long while since I`ve won a tournament, especially an ATP tournament.`` Baghdatis` two previous wins came in Beijing in 2006 and in Zagreb in 2007.
