  • [01] HOUSE PRESIDENT PRESIDENT OF RUSSIAN STATE DUMA

President of the State Duma Boris Gryzlov has underlined the historical ties and mutual understanding between Russia and Cyprus, adding that they share very close positions on many international issues.

Welcoming President of the House of Representatives Marios Garoyian to Moscow, Gryzlov praised the traditionally friendly relations between Russia and Cyprus and said that among both countries there is a dialogue of trust.

Garoyian, who is paying an official visit to Moscow at the invitation of Gryzlov, said he informed him about the current phase of the UN led direct negotiations held in Cyprus among the leaders of the two communities with a view to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem.

I must say that there is a coincidence of views, he stressed.

He noted the importance of his visit, saying it will further enhance bilateral relations and stressed that the excellent relations between the two parliaments and governments are founded on principles and common values.

The House President expressed the gratitude of the people of Cyprus for the steadfast and consistent support of Russia during many crucial times, saying that Russia stood by our side and supported us.

During the meeting, Garoyian proposed the enlargement of the 1997 cooperation protocol between the two parliaments. He said that his proposal has been accepted and the two parliaments will begin preparation in order to draft a more enhanced protocol.

Meanwhile, Garoyian extended an invitation to Gryzlov to pay an official visit to Cyprus, which he has accepted.

The House President, accompanied by a parliamentary delegation, held a meeting with Ivan Melnikov, Deputy President of the State Duma.

Melnikov said that Russia supports the positions of the Republic of Cyprus for achieving a just solution in Cyprus. He added that the effort to strengthen bilateral relations will be enhanced with emphasis on the interparliamentary level.

During his visit to Moscow, Garoyian will have a meeting with Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin.

The Cypriot parliamentary delegation consists of MPs Nikos Katsourides, Parliamentary Spokesman of AKEL, Averof Neofytou, Vice President of DISY, Andreas Angelides, Parliamentary Spokesman of the Democratic Party, Yiannakis Omirou, President of EDEK and Dimitris Syllouris, President of the European Party.

Garoyian and the delegation return to Cyprus on Thursday, October 29.

The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat have been engaged in talks since September 2008 with a view to find a mutually acceptable solution that will reunite the country, divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied the islands northern third.
