  • [01] MINISTER OF COMMERCE TOURISM - BRITAIN

Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Antonis Paschalides has expressed hope that the drop of tourist arrivals from Britain to Cyprus would be restrained to 10% for the year 2009 instead of the 20% decrease recorded during the first six months of the year.

Speaking on Monday during a dinner hosted by the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) in London, in the framework of the World Travel Market exhibition, Paschalides said this improvement was the result of the measures taken by the government.

Paschalides said that he was convinced by contacts in London during the first day of the World Travel Market that any difficulties for the Cypriot economy in 2010, as a result of the global financial crisis, would be overcome.

    [02] CYPRUS - ENDOVASCULAR SURGERY

A team of Cypriot and foreign doctors performed endovascular surgery on Monday to repair an aneurysm with the pioneering new method of the multilayer endovascular stent, on a 59-year-old Cypriot patient suffering from coronary disease.

Speaking at a press conference, Minister of Health Christos Patsalides said the operation was a milestone for Cyprus, noting that it proves the level of health care in Cyprus.

Patsalides added that an independent laboratory will be set up, where vascular surgeons, neurosurgeons and interventional radiographers will cooperate.

Referring to Monday`s operation, Patsalides thanked the team of doctors, headed by Antonis Polydorou, of Cypriot origin, who performed the graft free of charge.

This was the first such operation in Cyprus and the fifth worldwide.
