  • [01] PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS - CHRISTMAS WISHES

President Demetris Christofias has reiterated his resolve to work for the reunification of Cyprus, which would allow its people to live in peace and freedom.

«We are doing whatever we can in order to remove the flag of the illegal Turkish Cypriot regime on Pentadaktylos Mountain range, to see Cyprus reunited and allow the people to breath the air of freedom and friendship along with the Turkish Cypriots, President Christofias stressed.

President Christofias, the First Lady Elsi Christofia and the staff of the Presidential Palace listened today to Christmas carols by the choir of the Cyprus Police, the National Guard and the Greek contingent, stationed in Cyprus in accordance with the 1960 treaties that established the Republic of Cyprus.

President Christofias wished everybody Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Addressing the members of the National Guard, the President said the government stands by the side of the National Guard and will support the force as long as its existence is needed. Our objective is the demilitarization of Cyprus, peace and the reunification of the island. To live peacefully with the Turkish Cypriots without any domination from foreigners, he added

Referring to the members of the Greek contingent in Cyprus, Christofias whished them someday to visit a free Cyprus as tourists and expressed his gratitude to the governments of Greece for their support and solidarity to the government and the people of Cyprus.

President Christofias, speaking to the staff of the Presidential Palace, wished the new year to bring the reunification of our homeland. He assured them that efforts to solve the Cyprus problem are continuous, tough and persistent.

    [02] MILLET BRITAIN STATEMENT

British High Commissioner in Cyprus Peter Millett told CNA that Britains statement issued Tuesday in Brussels, can in no way be regarded as an anti-Cypriot counter statement.

Anyone who reads it will see that it is simply a reiteration of UK support for enlargement,`` he added.

Millet noted that the statement ``underlines the importance of candidate countries fulfilling their obligations and that bilateral disputes should be resolved through good neighbourly relations.``
