  • [01] GREEK PM - CYPRUS PROBLEM

Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot community must compromise to help the Cyprus peace talks succeed, the Prime Minister of Greece George Papandreou has told the Russian News Agency Itar Tass.

Fifteen months have passed already since the beginning of the talks, said Papandreou, adding that certain progress has been made, especially on governance and power sharing and the economy, but unfortunately no substantive progress on important issues has been achieved.

We are all aware that the talks are difficult, but we believe that a settlement is possible, the Greek Prime Minister stressed.

However if Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot community do not show the necessary will for moves and compromise, as President Christofias does, then I am afraid that a success at the talks will be difficult to achieve, he pointed out.

Papandreou is on a working visit to Moscow where he had meetings with Russian President Dmitri Medvedev and Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin.

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot Mehmet Ali Talat have been engaged in direct negotiations since September 2008 with a view to find a political settlement that will reunite the country, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.
