The Cyprus Police have confirmed that the body found on Monday night, at the new Strovolos cemetery in the Nicosia district belongs, to the late President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos.

The body was removed on 11 December 2009 from its grave in the cemetery of Deftera community, on the eve of Papadopoulos` first annual memorial service.

Police Spokesman Michalis Katsounotos told CNA today that ``there has been a DNA identification and the body indeed belongs to former President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos.``

The identification process was carried out at the Cyprus Institute of Genetics and Neurology, he said.

He added that the body was found after an anonymous tip off and that Police officers went to the cemetery, as did members of Papadopoulos` family, who identified some evidence.

Katsounotos assured that the Police would be releasing information on the case later in the day.
