  • [01] CYPRIOT FM GREEK PM

Foreign Minister Marcos Kyprianou and Greek Prime Minister and Foreign Minister George Papandreou reaffirmed on Friday in Athens the close cooperation between Greece and Cyprus. The meeting was also attended by Greek Alternate FM Demetris Droutsas.

An official press release said that Kyprianou informed Papandreou and Droutsas about developments in the Cyprus problem, in view of Papandreous visit to Cyprus on Monday.

In statements after the meeting, Droutsas said it was very useful, noting that it took place during a crucial period.

He noted that Kyprianou informed them on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem, the developments in Cyprus Turkish occupied areas, his recent contacts in the US and his meeting with the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Droutsas also said that he informed Kyprianou about his own contacts in Ankara.

Droutsas stressed Greeces continuous support to Cyprus, noting that the settlement of the Cyprus problem must come from Cypriot themselves and that Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriots must be able to negotiate freely their common future in the EU.

The Republic of Cyprus is an EU member state and therefore we want a European solution. The Republic of Cyprus will have to be able to operate effectively in the EU after a settlement of the Cyprus problem, he added.

He noted that there must be compliance and respect to the acquis communautaire, as regards the settlement, adding that the withdrawal of Turkish occupation troops is a fundamental precondition for a Cyprus settlement. He said that these were the messages, which he clearly sent during his visit in Ankara.

On his part, Kyprianou reconfirmed that there is an excellent and very close cooperation between the governments of Greece and Cyprus on how they address the issue of the settlement of the Cyprus problem and the talks on Cyprus that are underway, as well as the various challenges in Europe.

[02] PRESIDENT - ARCHBISHOP TURKISH PM

Archbishop of Cyprus Chrysostomos II will convey a message by Cyprus President Demetris Christofias to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayiip Erdogan during their meeting later this month in Constantinople.

The Archbishop met on Friday with Cyprus President Demetris Christofias, in view of his visits to Brussels and Constantinople.

In statements after the meeting, he said that President Christofias asked him to convey a message to the Turkish Prime Minister but did not wish to reveal what about this message is.

Chrysostomos said that he listen to Christofias views with which he fully agrees and that they bosh wish his meeting with Erdogan will be successful for the sake of Cyprus and its people.

    [03] GAROYIAN AHEPA DELEGATION

House President Marios Garoyian has briefed a delegation from AHEPA (American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association), an American Association of Expatriate Greeks on the latest developments in the Cyprus issue.

According to an official announcement, Garoyian held a meeting on Friday with the delegation headed by AHEPAs Supreme President Nicholas Karacostas.

Garoyian expressed his disappointment for the poor results of the direct negotiation process, between Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat and for the gap on the basic aspects of the Cyprus problem despite Greek Cypriot sides good will.

Cyprus House President said that the Greek Cypriot side seeks a solution of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation on the basis of the UN relevant resolutions. He also stressed that Ankara is the key holder for the solution of the Cyprus issue, and that Turkey is setting positions on the negotiation table that are outside the spirit and the principles of the Acquis Communautaire.

Garoyian noted that due to its geostrategic position, Turkey is being supported by several policy making centres, and underlined the role the Associations of the Expatriate Greeks can play in supporting the struggle of the people of Cyprus.
