  • [03] CYPRUS - «ARGONAFTIS 2010»

Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has said that discussion on internal aspects of the Cyprus question must progress before an international conference on the international aspects of the problem takes place. This, he explained, would prepare the ground to allow discussion on the international aspects of the problem at an international conference.

Stephanou said that given the fact that the Cyprus problem has two fundamental aspects, the domestic and the international aspects, and that domestic aspects will be resolved through bicommunal dialogue, the international aspects of the Cyprus will have to be settled during an international conference in the UN framework, in the presence of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, the EU, the guarantor powers and the Republic of Cyprus.

Stephanou said that if the two sides in Cyprus do not come close to a settlement and there is no ground to allow for optimism for the settlement of the internal aspects of the Cyprus problem, the international conference and the international aspects of the Cyprus problem will be up in the air.

He pointed out that the two communities in Cyprus also deal with the international aspects and will want to have a say and play a role in solving these aspects.

Responding to a question, Stephanou recalled that the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has expressed his views in public as well with regard to the international conference.

Replying to other questions, he noted that President Christofias agrees with the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community that social meetings need to take place.

Asked if the President has contacted the Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou after Erdogans visit to Greece, Stephanou said that Christofias will contact Papandreou and will be briefed and discuss with him the results of Erdogans recent visit to Athens and the issues concerning the Cyprus problem.

The Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus has reviewed the latest developments in the Cyprus problem, during its most recent meeting, according to an announcement, issued by the Church of Cyprus.

The Holy Synod, in a message to the people of Cyprus, stressed that the solution of the Cyprus problem should reunite the island in a free, independent, united and democratic state, with a single sovereignty, a single citizenship and a single international personality, without foreign guarantors, except from the European Union and the UN Security Council.

The solution, it adds, must provide for a state free of foreign troops, barbed wire and Turkish settlers and it must also safeguard the right of refugees to return to their homes.
