  • [01] EP PRESIDENT - CYPRUS - VISIT

European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek is in Cyprus for an official visit until October 12.

Today Buzek will be received by President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and meet President of the House of Representatives Marios Garoyian.

Speaking prior to his visit, Buzek said that he was coming to Cyprus with a message of encouragement, support and trust in both leaders to reach a comprehensive solution of the Cyprus problem.

Today he will also meet the leaders of the political parties represented at the European Parliament, and in the afternoon he will address a Special Session of the House of Representatives.

On Monday evening President Christofias will host an official dinner in honour of Buzek.

On Tuesday, the President of the European Parliament will address the ``Renewable Energy Sources`` conference and meet the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community Dervis Eroglu and the leader of the Republican Turkish Party Ferdi Sabit Soyer.

Yesterday Buzek was scheduled to meet with Chairman of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry Manthos Mavrommatis and Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Cyprus and Chief of Mission of UNFICYP Lisa Buttenheim.

    [02] CHRISTOFIAS - MORPHOU

There can be no solution to the Cyprus problem without the return of Morphou under Greek Cypriot administration, President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias pointed out on Sunday.

Addressing a gathering in the context of Morphou anti-occupation events, the President said the Greek Cypriot side always believed that the solution of the Cyprus problem would come after a creative approach by both sides, adding that he expected the international community to address those who obstruct the solution process.

President Christofias recalled the three-point proposal he submitted recently aiming at expediting the ongoing UN-led talks, which began in 2008 for a mutually agreed solution of the Cyprus problem.

He specifically referred to his proposal for a parallel discussion of the chapters of property and territory and the issue of settlers, noting that this proposal is ``directly related to Morphou and the need for its return under Greek Cypriot administration.``
