  • [01] BELGIUM EP DECISION

Ambassador of Belgium in Cyprus Guy Servin said on Wednesday that the decision of the Committee on Legal Affairs of the European Parliament on direct trade between the EU and Cyprus` Turkish occupied areas is a relief for the island.

I think its a relief for Cyprus that within Europe we chose to provide the legal basis for this issue. It will be unfair to see it as an element of trade with third countries. This would make the discussion on reunification of this island even more complicated, he said speaking on the sidelines of a meeting between the General Secretary of Cypriot party AKEL and the ambassadors of EU member-states.

The Ambassador of the country that holds EU rotating Presidency recalled that the EP Legal Committee has decided that the legal basis on direct trade between the EU and Cyprus Turkish occupied areas is the article 10 of Cyprus accession treaty. He added that the position the Committee took is completely in line with the Cypriot position, so Cyprus couldn`t have asked for more on this stage.

Servin said however that it is not very clear what will happen from this decision onwards and how the Commission of the leaders of the Parliament, the European Council and European Commission will handle the issue.

Furthermore, the Belgian Ambassador expressed the full support of Belgian Presidency to Cyprus. He pointed out that there were a lot of visits and contacts in Cyprus in the framework of the Belgian Presidency and the EP as well.

He added that people came, saw and understood the situation in Cyprus.

Cyprus, which joined the EU in 2004, has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

    [02] PARTIES MEETING- SOLUTION

The leaders and the representatives of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot Political Parties agreed that a negotiated settlement within the context of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality as agreed between the two leaders on 23 May and 1 July, 2008 would safeguard the identities of all Cypriots and bring greater prosperity and a stable future within Europe to all the inhabitants of the island.

The leaders and the representatives of the two communities political parties met on Wednesday for their regular meeting in Ledra Palace.

According to a joint communique, read out after the meeting by Ambassador of Slovakia Anna Turenicova, the representatives expressed opinions on the issue An analysis of the current situation and future prospect`` as proposed by the hosting party the Greek Cypriot Democratic Rally (DISY).

They also agreed that failure of the current negotiations will have negative repercussions, primarily on Cypriots, but also on Greece and Turkey and on the EU and other international actors.

They, therefore reiterated their readiness to work together in order to achieve a federal solution as soon as possible. The meeting also greeted the opening of the Limnitis-Pyrga check-point as a positive step leading to increased contacts and positive benefits for the area.
