  • [01] AKEL SG - KYPRIANOU REELECTION

The 105-member strong Central Committee of ruling left-wing AKEL party reelected on Sunday Andros Kyprianou as the Secretary General of the party. While announcing the election result at the 21st pancyprian conference of AKEL, it was said no other candidacies were submitted. In favor of Kyprianou voted 98 members of the newly-elected Central Committee, while 3 voted against and 4 abstained.

Kyprianou, while taking the floor, said it is imperative to support the President of the Republic Demetris Christofias, in his effort to find a negotiated solution to the Cyprus problem. He added, that only a final solution to the problem will ensure stability and peace in Cyprus, giving a chance to the people to prosper.

In his address speech, Kyprianou said that he will remain one of the people, saying that the role of the Secretary General is to be the first among equals.

Moreover, he extended an invitation to all political forces, to work together towards the solution of the Cyprus problem and in favor of national unity. This unity needs to be based on principles, he said, adding that it has to take into consideration the commitments of the Greek Cypriot side towards the international community and the Turkish Cypriot Community, as well as the decisions taken at the National Council.

    [02] EDUCATION MINISTER NEGOTIATIONS

The Minster of Education and Culture Andreas Demetriou said he expects from the Turkish side to show the necessary will at the negotiations, in order for the talks to bear fruit and signal better days for the country.

Speaking at the annual commemoration service of the fallen members of the community of Lakatamia, the Minister added that the Greek Cypriot side has proved its good will for the creation of a conducive atmosphere with the Turkish Cypriot side, that will facilitate the dialogue on a systematic basis, under the aegis of the UN.

Demetriou reaffirmed the political will for putting an end to the division of the island and added that Cyprus, already a member of the EU for six years, meets all the necessary preconditions to develop and progress, securing thus a peaceful future for all its people.

He added that the new conditions that prevailed after the election of President Christofias, set the ground for new hope and expectations on the part of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, with regards to the renewal of the negotiations and the exit from the year-long deadlock.
