  • [01] PRESIDENT - BRUSSELS

President of the Republic Demetris Christofias departed on Saturday for Brussels to attend the European Council to focus on the Eurozone debt crisis on October 23.

The one-day Summit will focus on the future of the Eurozone, the new architecture of economic governance in the European Union and discussions on the sources of economic growth.

    [02] OMIROU - CYPRUS - ADVANTAGE

Cyprus for the first time in its history can utilise its geographical position as a significant competitive advantage that will strengthen the struggle for freedom and vindication, President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou said on Saturday.

Addressing a conference organised by the European Party on ``EU Relations with the Muslim and Arab World``, Omirou said that Cyprus and Greece must reevaluate their stance towards Turkeys European course. He noted that with the conclusion of the EEZ delineation agreements with Egypt, Lebanon and Israel, Cyprus moves on to an important step that allows it to become an energy factor in the region. The EU Presidency in the second half of 2012 strengthens the possibilities of a decisive presence of Cyprus in regional and European developments and the Parliaments preparations to contribute to this effort are in full.

Regarding the Turkish role in the region, the House President said that it would be a naive and extremely dangerous distraction to hope and expect for a meaningful shift in Turkish policy on the Cyprus issue on the basis of the tug between Erdogan and the generals.``

Referring to the Arab Spring, Omirou said that it expresses a hope for a better tomorrow and that the proximity of Cyprus to the countries is a valuable asset for the EU. He noted that the EU must pay special attention to the developments in Libya, Egypt, Tunisia and the rest of the region and must help the Arab world to achieve the goal of transition to democracy and to create a hopeful future. The same applies to the Syrian people, facing the violent reaction of a tyrannical regime, he added.

    [03] MARKOULLIS - CYPRUS - EU

Minister of Foreign Affairs Erato Kozakou Markoullis has stressed that one of the priorities of Cyprus` EU Presidency is to deepen the Southern Dimension of the European Neighbourhood Policy and to highlight the importance of the relations between the EU and countries from the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East. The presidency of Cyprus will emphasise in particular EU relations with the countries of North Africa, Middle East, Gulf countries and the Arab League countries, she added.

Addressing a conference organised by the European Party on ``EU Relations with the Muslim and Arab World``, the Foreign Minister considered that the developments in Tunisia and Egypt will broadly determine the outcome of ``Arab Spring``, pointing out that crucial elections are been prepared which will construct a system of political rights and democratic institutions, sending messages to the countries of the region.

These are developments of historic magnitude and significance which not only determine the future of the particular countries but our future in the EU, she said. The EU must aim to contribute with all its power to set a solid foundation, lasting democracy and prosperity in the countries of the southern neighbourhood, she added, welcoming the recent adoption by the European Commission last September of four programs which aim to support initiatives for greater democracy, economic development, a substantial number of new jobs and facilitating the access of young people to higher education.

    [04] TYRIMOS - INTERVIEW

Cypriot composer Martinos Tyrimos gave his first concert at the age of six, performed Haydns Concerto in D at eight and when only twelve he conducted seven complete performances of Verdis La Traviata, including soloists οφ La Scala, Milan. The 2011 Nemitsas Foundation Prize for Excellence in the Arts and Sciences has been awarded to both Tirimos and Cyprien Katsaris, also a pianist. The award ceremony took place at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia on 16 September 2011 when the President of the Republic conferred to the two Laureates this prestigious honour of international stature. In 2012 Katsaris and Tirimos will give several concerts during Cyprus` presidency of the European Union.

In an interview with CNA, Tyrimos referred to the great results of classic music in various treatments which are now implemented worldwide, and noted that the masterpieces of prominent composers include sonic vibrations which can help people and their inner world.

Referring to major turning points in his life, Tyrimos noted that when he was 12 he conducted La Traviata in Cyprus, with soloists from La Scala, Milan. He also said that it was unforgettable for him that he performed Beethovens concert 4 at Irodio theatre in Athens with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Vienna. Until now he is the sole amongst Greek or Cypriot soloists to have cooperated with this orchestra.
