Omirou visited on Saturday morning the Ándreas Papandreou Military Base, located in Pafos to express wishes to the personnel, officers and members of the National Guard.

He said that as long as the Turkish occupation in Cyprus continues and the Turkish threat remains, the armed forces of the Republic of Cyprus should serve as fist to prevent any expansions and so that Turkey will know that the price for any new attempt against the Republic of Cyprus will be very high.

We are obliged to celebrate Christmas under circumstances of continuous Turkish occupation and violation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of our people Omirou noted, adding that the message is clear we struggle for security, stability and cooperation in the broader Eastern Mediterranean region.

He also pointed out that the message towards Turkey is that if this country wants to fulfill its European aspirations, it should abandon its expansionist attitude towards Cyprus and Greece and should also abandon its threats with regards to the Cypriot EU Presidency of 2012.

Turkey should understand that it cannot be the troublemaker of the region he added.

[02] FinMin: Cyprus to receive a 600 mln euro tranche of Russian loan

The 2.5 loan agreement, valid for 4.5 years, with a nominal annual yield of 4.5% was signed today in Moscow by Kazamias and Deputy Finance Minister of the Russian Federation Sergey Storchak.

``The climate was particularly friendly at our meeting with our Russian colleagues and I believe this agreement will assist Cyprus to face some of the consequences of the European and global financial crisis,`` Kazamias said.

Without elaborating, he added that those who questioned Cyprus` move to secure a loan from the Russian Federation are now appealing to Moscow for financial assistance.

ITAR-TASS news agency reported that the loan will be allocated in three installments of which the second will be disbursed in February 2012.
