  • [01] Defence Minister: Cyprus a hub for Search and Rescue

Cyprus aims to become a hub for Search and Rescue operations in the Eastern Mediterranean, Defence Minister Demetris Eliades has told a seminar titled “Search and Rescue Operations.”

This, he pointed out, would obstruct Turkey’s illegal objectives to challenge Nicosia’s FIR and the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus.

Addressing the seminar in the southern coastal town of Larnaka, Eliades said the Search and Rescue programme is funded by the European Union and is expected to be fully operational in 2013.

“We believe this is very important in that the whole effort is part of efforts to establish Cyprus as a hub of Search and Rescue operations in the area of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea”, he stressed.

The main aim of the seminar is to attract volunteers and private organizations to contribute to the National Plan on Search and Rescue.

The Minister said that in the vital area of Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and Nicosia FIR “we not only have rights, but we also have responsibilities, which we should undertake with efficiency and reliability”.

[02] Sylikiotis discusses Cyprus` EU presidency with EU Commissioner

Minister of the Interior Neoclis Sylikiotis met on Wednesday in Brussels EU Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, Kristalina Georgieva, with whom he discussed the proposed legislation by the European Commission on the creation of a Civil Protection Mechanism.

According to an official announcement, this proposed legislation, which incorporates the Civil Protection Financial Instrument, provides, inter alia, for the strengthening of the Monitoring Information Centre (MIC) and its conversion into an Emergency Response Centre (ERC).

It also provides for the creation of a European Response Force, of logistical hubs and the strengthening of the transport sector and its financing.

Sylikiotis said that during Cyprus’ six monthly rotating presidency of the Council of the EU, the intention is to conclude the review of the legislation that began under the Danish Presidency and open the necessary dialogue.
