  • [01] Greek FM: Bagis` statements prove real intentions of Ankara in Cyprus

Greek Foreign Minister Stavros Demas said that recent statements made by Turkey`s European Affairs Minister Egemen Bagis about an option to annex the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus, prove Ankara`s real intentions on the Cyprus issue.

In a recent interview to the Turkish Cypriot newspaper ``Kibris``, Bagis talked about a reunification of Cyprus under a deal that (the two) leaders could reach, creation of two independent states after an agreement between the two leaders if they are unable to reach a deal for reunification, or annexation of the illegal regime in the Turkish occupied north of Cyprus to Turkey.

``Such a statement, as well as Bagis` unsuccessful attempt to restore his statement, reaffirm once more that the Cyprus issue is an issue of invasion and occupation``, the Greek FM stressed, adding that ``Bagis` statements proved Ankara`s real intentions in Cyprus and who is really to blame for the lack of progress at the negotiating table``.

[02] Cypriot Nobel Prize Winner proposes ways to combat unemployment

Ways to combat unemployment especially among the youth in Cyprus were discussed in a meeting the Cypriot Nobel Prize winner Christophoros Pissarides had with the Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Soteroulla Charalambous.

Pissarides noted that there are no “miracle solutions”, adding that the Cypriot economy has been affected by the economic crisis. He underlined that the Ministry is doing a good job in tackling the problem, however “there is more to be done and a discussion can take place with the engagement of the trade unions as they play a very vital role”.

Pissarides’ proposals include the temporary extension of the benefit allowances period, the introduction of the system of part time employment as well as the temporary suspension of some of the clauses in the collective agreements so that there is a bigger demand for jobs to the benefit of the young population.

[03] Interior Minister optimistic about Common European Asylum System

Interior Minister Neoklis Sylikiotis has expressed optimism that discussions on the Common European Asylum System (CEAS) during Cyprus’ EU Presidency in the second half of 2012 will conclude.

In an interview with CNA, the Minister acknowledged that the CEAS is a complex issue, with a lot of differences in opinion among EU member states. However he said the objective to conclude these talks is realistic.

He said that establishing a Common European Asylum System is not only a target set by the Cyprus Presidency but it is also adopted by the EU as a whole, recalling that in the conclusions of past European Councils, EU member states have highlighted the need to set up such a system by the end of 2012.

“Establishing the CEAS is a step towards creating a better Europe, the EU has to operate in a way that it both assists all those who need protection but it also deals with the huge influx of migrants and people who take advantage of the current asylum systems”, Minister pointed out.
