  • [01] Cyprus President conveys message of unity

President of the Republic Demetris Christofias has conveyed a message of love, cooperation and unity.

Speaking after Easter Mass service, President Christofias said "I would like to extend a message of love, friendship, cooperation and unity", adding that even if Jesus was resurrected, "Cyprus and its people are still carrying the cross to Golgotha", an official statement said.

"I therefore extend a message of hope and I am sure that this unacceptable condition, which is being maintained by expansionist Turkey, finds supporters on the international arena including great forces, will not continue forever", he added.

We are working very hard, despite the fact that we are dealing with Turkey's intransigence, and "I am sure and optimistic that the time will come for our liberation".

UN-led talks are currently underway between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus with an aim to reunify the island, divided since the Turkish invasion of 1974 which resulted with the occupation of the island's northern third.
