  • [01] Ésraeli FM begins talks with Cyprus government

    Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman who arrived on the island Monday, begins talks today in Nicosia.

    During his talks on Tuesday, Liberman will have a tete-a-tete meeting with Foreign Affairs Erato Kozakou – Maręoullis, followed by official talks of the two delegations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nicosia.

    Israeli FM will then be received by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Demetris Christofias, at the Presidential Palace and visit the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism to meet with Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Neoklis Sylikiotis.

    During his visit to Cyprus, the Israeli FM will also meet the leaders of the two major parties of the island, main opposition Democratic Rally President Nicos Anastasiades and ruling AKEL Secretary General Antros Kyprianou.

    On Wednesday he will visit the Desalination Plant in Episkopi, near the southern coastal town of Limassol. He will depart on Wednesday evening.

    [02] China: Cyprus talks contribute to reunification

    China believes that continuing talks for a Cyprus settlement would significantly contribute to the reunification of the island and stability in the region.

    Chinese Ambassador in Nicosia Li Guobang, who was received on Tuesday by President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias, said ``China`s position on the Cyprus problem is clear and consistent.``

    ``We respect the territorial integrity and the sovereignty of Cyprus and we support the continuation of the negotiations. We believe that the continuation of the negotiations will significantly contribute to the reunification of Cyprus and stability in the region,`` he added, speaking through an interpreter.

    The Chinese Ambassador also said that he discussed the Cyprus problem and bilateral relations with President Christofias. ``As you know, Cyprus and China are traditionally friendly countries. Last year we celebrated the 40th anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic relations,`` he said, adding that China attributes great importance to bilateral relations. The Ambassador noted that ``bilateral relations are at an historical stage and we will make joint efforts to further enhance and upgrade our bilateral relations.``

    [03] House President to participate in Warsaw meeting

    President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou departs for Warsaw on Wednesday to participate in a Meeting of Presidents of Parliament of EU member states, to take place from April 19 to 21.

    The meeting will also be attended by Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs Averof Neophytou.

    On the agenda are the crisis in EU unity, parliamentary control of the Common Foreign and Security Policy and the Common Security and Defence Policy, and the Stability Pact.

    Omirou will be returning to Cyprus on April 22.

    [04] Lord Mayor of the City of London to visit Cyprus

    The Lord Mayor of the City of London David Wootton and the City of London Corporation's Policy Chairman Stuart Fraser will travel to Cyprus for a three-day visit next week (22-24 April) to prepare for the forthcoming rotation of the European Presidency from Denmark.

    According to the website of the City of London, the Lord Mayor and the Policy Chairman will be using this visit as an opportunity to speak with a number of high-level Cypriot policy makers, civic leaders, businesses and trade associations.

    Lord Mayor David Wootton said that "the City of London fully recognises how vital European cooperation is to our continuing success and to our future prosperity. We look forward to working together with the Cypriot Presidency to overcome the obstacles that stand in the way of jobs and growth across the continent".

    He added "it is important to know what agenda the next country to hold the European Presidency will be pursuing and to feed in the City's thoughts on current and future EU regulation before it takes office. That is why the City of London maintains a constant presence in Brussels and the Cypriot Presidency will play a major role in shaping the direction of future European legislation."
