    The work achieved so far by the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU has received praise from European Parliament President Martin Shultz and leader of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament Hannes Swoboda.

    According to an official press release issued here on Sunday, the two men had separate meetings on Saturday, with Minister of Health Stavros Malas, who was representing President of the Republic Demetris Christofias at the European Socialist Party Conference, in Brussels.

    It is noted that during the meetings both Shultz and Swoboda praised the work achieved so far by the Cyprus Presidency, expressing their satisfaction over the serious and effective handling of the European agenda by the Cyprus government.

    [02] Nine EU Ministerial Councils in Luxembourg in October

    Nine EU Ministerial Councils will take place in October in Luxembourg under the Cyprus EU Presidency The Councils are: Employment, ECOFIN, Competitiveness, Foreign Affairs, General Affairs, Agriculture and Fisheries, Environment, Justice and Transports.

    In addition, a Eurogroup meeting will take place in Luxembourg on the 8th of October, on the sidelines of which the European Stability Mechanism's Board of Governors will hold its inaugural meeting.

    The EU Ministerial Councils are held every April, June and October in Luxembourg, after a decision of the European Council at Edinburgh in December 1992. In addition, a European Council will take place 18 and 19 October in Brussels.

    [03] Cyprus unemployment records second highest increase in a year

    Unemployment in Cyprus recorded the second highest increase between August 2011 and August 2012 in the EU, reaching from 8 to 11,7%.

    According to figures from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, among the Member States, the lowest unemployment rates were recorded in Austria (4.5%), Luxembourg (5.2%), the Netherlands (5.3%) and Germany (5.5%), and the highest in Spain (25.1%) and Greece (24.4% in June 2012).

    Compared with a year ago, the unemployment rate increased in twenty Member States, fell in six and remained stable in the United Kingdom. The largest falls were observed in Estonia (13.2% to 10.1% between the second quarters of 2011 and 2012), Lithuania (15.0% to 12.9%) and Latvia (17.0% to 15.9% between the second quarters of 2011 and 2012).

    [04] Working group on SSM convenes under Cyprus EU Presidency

    The European Commission's proposal on a single supervisory mechanism (SSM) for banks in the euro area will be discussed at the European Council that will take place in Brussels 18 - 19 October.

    The EU Council's working group which examines the Commission's proposal convened last week under the Presidency of a senior official of the Central Bank of the Republic of Cyprus. The Commission's proposals for a single supervisory mechanism for banks in the euro area were presented on the 12 of September.

    The Commission believes that they are an important step in strengthening the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU).
