The discovery of oil and gas resources in Cyprus` Exclusive Economic Zone has the potential to bring greater prosperity and energy security to the region, British Minister for Europe David Lidington has said, and expressed hope that all countries in the region will work to overcome their differences to develop those resources in a mutually beneficial way.

He was responding a question by Labour MP Jim Sheridan during a meeting at the British House of Commons concerning the political consequences in the middle east of the exploration for oil and gas off the coast of Cyprus.

Responding to another question by the same MP, Lidington said that "we have repeatedly stated publicly our acceptance that the Republic of Cyprus has sovereign rights to exploit its mineral reserves within its exclusive economic zone."

[05] Banking Union, MFF, and Cyprus' energy reserves in focus at ACCA Forum

Cyprus Presidency believes that banking union is necessary for achieving a genuine European monetary Union and breaking the negative feedback loop between sovereigns states and banks, said Friday Minister of Finance Vassos Shiarly, speaking at the Forum "Regional solutions for a changing Europe - Celebrating the Cyprus Presidency of the EU Council", hosted by the Association of Chartered certified Accountants (ACCA) and the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Cyprus (ICPAC).

Shiarly said that single supervision is also a precondition for the introduction of potential direct recapitalisation of banks by the ESM.

The Cyprus Presidency, the Cypriot Minister added, had given the proposal of a Single Supervisory Mechanism its immediate priority.
