  • [01] Ambassador Korneliou: Cyprus gains from EU experience

Representative of Cyprus at the EU, Ambassador Kornelios Korneliou, has said that Cyprus has gained a lot from its six month experience at the helm of the Council of the EU.

Korneliou also referred to the numerous successes during the Cyprus Presidency, such as the unitary patent package (an issue that was on the table for 30 years ), the agreement reached by the Ministers of Finance to set up a Single Supervisory Mechanism for the oversight of credit institutions as well as issues in the area of justice and home affairs.

Addressing an event at the Permanent Representation of Cyprus at the EU in Brussels, in the presence of Cyprus President Demetris Christofias, Ambassador Korneliou laid emphasis on the agreement on the SSM saying that "after fifteen hours of negotiations at the ECOFIN, the Cyprus EU Presidency managed to close a dossier on the baking union which is "another major success, one of many successes by the Cyprus Presidency".

[02] PIMCO results instrumental in determining Cyprus program, IMF says

PIMCO preliminary assessment results will be instrumental in determining the financing of a potential Cyprus program, IMF Spokesman Gerry Rice has said.

Rice was replying to a question on the progress achieved in talks with the Cyprus government on an international rescue agreement.

"The discussion between the Cypriot authorities and the IMF and our partners in the EU Commission and ECB are continuing from the respective headquarters with a view to making further progress toward a potential program with Cyprus", he noted.
