  • [01] Annual inflation rises in Cyprus, the Eurozone and the EU

Annual inflation in Cyprus, the Eurozone and the EU went up in June, according to data published on Tuesday by Eurostat.

Cyprus' inflation was 0.8% in June, up from 0.2% last May.

In Greece, the rate remained unchanged, at -0.3%, while continuing to be negative for a fourth consecutive month. Euro area annual inflation was 1.6% in June 2013, up from 1.4% in May, while EU annual inflation increased to 1.7% in June 2013, up from 1.6% in May.

[02] EU to help Cyprus following outbreak of Newcastle Disease

The crisis in Cyprus' poultry sector, due to an outbreak of the Newcastle Disease, was examined during the Agriculture and Fisheries Council meeting in Brussels, at the initiative of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment Minister Nicos Kouyialis.

During the discussion, which was requested by the Cypriot delegation, Minister Kouyialis explained to his counterparts the extremely onerous economic repercussion on Cypriot farmers who had to put down hundreds of thousands of poultry which resulted in consumers losing their confidence in the local produce.

He said the outbreak of the disease is not due to negligence on the part of the Veterinary Services but it came from the island's northern Turkish occupied areas, where the legal government of the Republic is prevented from having access by the Turkish military.

[03] Cyta records positive results for 2012

Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (Cyta) has recorded positive results for 2012 despite the challenging economic environment with its earnings from operations amounting to €63,7 million compared to €67,2 million in 2011. At the same time, the Organization's predictions for 2013 are also promising.

The financial results of the organization were presented by Stathis Kittis, CyTA`s chairman of the board of directors, during a press conference held here today.

Kittis noted that despite a very difficult economic environment, with negative growth rates and intense competition, Cyta, with a serious and prudent management of its finances, managed to produce positive results and at the same time, to stand by the country during these crucial times of economic crisis.

[04] Cyprus trade deficit down, Eurostat data show

Cyprus' annual trade deficit was down by €500 million during the first four months of 2013, according to Eurostat data published on Tuesday.

The total value of Cyprus' exports during the first four months of the year came to €500 million, recording an increase of 14% in relation to the corresponding period of 2012. Imports on the other hand were of a value of €1.5 billion, down by 20% compared to €1.9 billion during the first four months of 2012.
