The European Film Academy chose the Cypriot movie "Block 12" by director Kyriacos Tofarides as one of forty movies to contest for a candidacy in the 26th European Film Awards.

According to an announcement by the Cyprus Ministry of Education and Culture, the selection "is a great honor for Cypriot cinema in general", since the movie has been chosen among hundreds of European films. The awards, dubbed as the "European Oscars" will be given to the final candidates by the 2,700 members of the European Film Academy.
