US Congressman Eliot Engel has called on Secretary of State John Kerry to stop Turkey`s "belligerent actions to prevent Cyprus from utilizing its EEZ [exclusive economic zone] in accordance with international law."

In a letter dated August 1, 2013, Engel encouraged Secretary Kerry to "communicate to the Turkish government the concern of the United States about such actions and to caution Ankara against such dangerous behavior," and to give "urgent attention to this matter."

According to a press release issued by the International Coordinating Committee "Justice for Cyprus" (PSEKA), Engel`s letter cites Turkey`s 2011 bellicose actions against Cyprus` right to explore for energy and notes Secretary of State Hillary Clinton`s active discouragement of those actions.
