[01] Inflation dropped to 2.4% in Cyprus for 2012Cyprus` inflation for 2012 dropped to 2.4% year compared to 3.3% in 2011, figures released by the Statistical Service show.In December 2012 inflation decelerated to 1.1% year on year, the lowest level since October 2009 when it dropped to -0.8%. According to CyStat, the decline is mainly due to the reduction in electricity prices, fuel prices and potatoes. Prices rose in fresh vegetables and liquid gas. [02] President: Efforts to reunite island did not succeed due to TurkeyEfforts for the right solution to the Cyprus problem have been continuous, however they did not bear fruit due the Turkish intransigence, President of the Republic Demetris Christofias has said.Speaking on Thursday at an event in Larnaka for the inauguration of the new building of the Council of the occupied village of Kontea, the President said that in order to prevent the partition of the island and to maintain the prospect for a solution, we need to be very careful in the future. "We should not be fooled by Turkey's game either by setting it free from its obligations towards the United Nations Security Council for a solution of bizonal, bicommunal federation or by giving in to its demands to change the basis of the solution", he pointed out. [03] Cyprus banking sector turns a new page, CBC Governor saysThe Cypriot banking sector is turning a new page, Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) Governor Panicos Demetriades said on Thursday, as Cyprus began implementing the terms of a Memorandum of Understanding with the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund.The Memorandum was agreed in principle in the context of Cyprus` application for financial assistance from the EU bailout mechanism. Excluded from the international capital markets, Cyprus on June 25, 2012, requested financial assistance after its two largest banks sought state support to fulfill their capital requirements following a massive write-down of Greek sovereign bonds and loans granted to Greece. Cyprus acquired €1.8 billion shares of Cyprus Popular Bank amounting to 10% of the island`s €17.9 GDP, while Bank of Cyprus, the island`s largest lender, announced it will request state support worth of €500 million. [04] France congratulates Cyprus on the successful EU PresidencyThe Spokesperson of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs has congratulated on behalf of the French government the Cypriot authorities for the successful Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU.During a daily Press briefing and on the occasion of the commencement of the Irish Presidency, the Spokesperson of the French Foreign Ministry referred to the achievements of the Cyprus Presidency. He namely referred to the agreement on the Single Supervisory Mechanism, the future Cohesion Policy and the European Unitary Patent and the agreements reached with the European Parliament on a number of legislative proposals. [05] Turkish FM document reveals great dangers for CyprusThe Turkish Foreign Ministry document on the foreign policy of Turkey in 2013 reveals the great dangers lying ahead for Cyprus and the prospects of the struggle for a solution and reunification, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has said.Stephanou noted that the document "highlights as one of Turkey's goal to change the process on the Cyprus problem provided by the UN resolutions and to achieve a settlement of the Cyprus problem through a four-party conference, which will certainly not be based on the Security Council resolutions." He added that "both a new process and extended negotiations, as well as a policy on the Cyprus problem which will be initiated from scratch facilitate Turkey to promote and implement its goals on the Cyprus problem, which aim at the division of the island." [06] State company to undertake all hydrocarbons-related issuesCyprus' Hydrocarbons State Company (KRETYK) will undertake all maters related to hydrocarbons, in accordance with the Republic of Cyprus laws and taking into consideration the pursuit of the country's public interest, Government Spokesman Stefanos Stefanou has said.The Spokesman's comments came in response to press questions on media reports that the government is handing over negotiations with "Noble Energy" to the Board of KRETYK. Negotiations were pursued so far by a government team, under the Energy Director of the Ministry of Commerce Solon Kasinis and the participation of the Treasury and the Law Office of the Republic.
