  • [01] Cyta teleconferencing services contributed to a successful Cyprus Presidency

The important contribution of the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (Cyta) - the major telecommunications provider on the island- to the success of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, during the second half of 2012, was stressed during an event organized here Friday during which a live connection of Nicosia with Brussels and Athens took place using the teleconference services "Telepresence", to present the results of Cyprus EU Presidency.

Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou underlined the great success of the Cyprus Presidency, as a result of the right planning and priorities set out by the government as well as the efforts made by public servants and others who worked in order to prove that a small country like Cyprus can carry out a very successful EU Presidency.

He noted that the government's decision to give Cyta the responsibility to fulfill the great task of providing telecommunication services to the Cyprus Presidency proved to be right. Deputy Minister for European Affairs Andreas Mavroyiannis underlined the central role of the crisis management room which connected Cyprus with Brussels, using "Telepresence".

"We gathered in this room everyone who dealt with issues concerning the Presidency, we found solutions and moved forward," he noted, and described "Telepresence" as an excellent tool for long-distance telecommunication

[02] Financial crisis affecting TEPAK's development, says Rector

The financial crisis has altered the plans of the Cyprus University of Technology as the state grant has significantly been reduced, according to Professor Elpida Keravnou-Papailiou, the first Rector of TEPAK, who described the budget as one of survival and not development.

During a press conference to present the university's achievements for 2012 and its plans for 2013-2015, Keravnou said that the austerity measures that are in place by the ministries of Education and Finance create new conditions for the university which must continue efforts to develop its strategic planning with less funds and adopting important changes in handling its finances.

According to Vice Rector Andreas Anagiotos, TEPAK's budget has decreased by 13 million euro, reaching 47 million, however the Ministry of Education notes that the budget should be reduced to 40,3 million euro.
