  • [01] Stavros Malas concedes defeat

    AKEL backed Stavros Malas has conceded defeat in Sunday's run-off presidential election.

    He told his supporters at his election headquarters, before final results were announced, that he has already contacted Nicos Anastasiades and has congratulated him on his victory.

    He said that he would back Anastasiades' actions and efforts to bring the people together but would be critical of any moves he disagrees with.

    Joseph Daul MEP, Chairman of the EPP Group in the European Parliament has pledged that the committed and determined leadership of Nicos Anastasiades can ensure the return to a sustainable path of recovery for Cyprus.

    In a statement, Daul declared on behalf of his parliamentary group his congratulations to Nicos Anastasiades, Democratic Rally`s Party leader, "on his historic election as President of the Republic of Cyprus".

    "The people of Cyprus have given Nicos Anastasiades their trust in responsibly and consistently handling the huge and complex challenges lying ahead for Cyprus", outlined Joseph Daul MEP.

    [03] Cypriot Nobel laureate congratulates Nicos Anastasiades

    Cypriot Nobel laureate Christopher Pissarides has congratulated President elect Nicos Anastasiades.

    In statements he made earlier tonight at Anastasiades' campaign offices in Nicosia, Pissarides said that Anastasiades' viewpoint on the economy is correct, adding that the struggle for economic recovery begins from this point onwards.

    "I believe anything is possible", he noted.
