Developments in the Eastern Mediterranean and the new era in Cypriot-Israeli relations were among the issues discussed during a meeting in Washington between government spokesman Christos Stylianides and representatives of the American Jewish Committee (AJC).

According to an official press release, Stylianides, who is in the US to attend the 29th Annual Cyprus and Hellenic Leadership Conference, met with AJC Executive Director David Harris and AJC Director of Government and International Affairs Jason Isaacson.

Stylianides and his interlocutors discussed about the geopolitical situation in the Middle East issue and the new era in Cypriot-Israeli relations as well as about the traditionally good relations of the AJC with the Greek and Cypriot community in the US. Both sides assured that these relations will be strengthened even more.

[02] Spokesman discusses Cyprus problem and energy issues with top US official

The Cyprus problem and energy issues were on the agenda of a meeting Government Spokesman Christos Stylianides had with the American Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs Eric Rubin in Washington.

Stylianides is currently visiting the US where he attended the 29th Annual Cyprus and Hellenic Leadership Conference in Washington DC, hosted by PSEKA.

Speaking to CNA, the Spokesman recalled that the American official held a meeting with the Cyprus President in Nicosia last week. He said that during the meeting at the State Department they discussed the current developments in the region, including the issue of Iran. He also added that the energy safety is a very important vehicle through which we can establish cooperation.

[03] Government welcomes statements by US official on Cyprus issue

The government of Cyprus has welcomed the statements made by US Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, responsible for Cyprus, Eric Rubin, on the Cyprus issue.

Acting Government Spokesman Victoras Papadopoulos said on Wednesday that Rubin's remarks at the 29th Annual Cyprus and Hellenic Leadership Conference, which opened Tuesday in Washington, are welcomed by the government of Cyprus.

"We note Mr Rubin's reference that the U.S. will support Cyprus in addressing the difficulties due to the economic crisis as well as his reference to the US wish for the immediate strengthening of ties with Cyprus", he pointed out.

[04] Operations of three semi-sate organisations suspended

The Cabinet decided to suspend the operation of three semi-state organisations, Minister of Agriculture Nicos Kougialis announced on Wednesday. The operation of the Cyprus Milk Industry Organisation and the Wine Products Council is being ceased immediately, while the Cyprus Potato Marketing Board will close down in the next two years.

The Cabinet adopted during today's meeting, under President Anastasiades, the relevant proposal, submitted by the Minister of Agriculture.

Competences are being transferred to the Ministry's Department of Agriculture, while the 81 employees working in these organisations will be absorbed in the public service. Kougialis said moreover that this decision will save the state 3.5 mln euros per year.
