    The Cyprus problem and bilateral relations between Cyprus and Ireland in the fields of commerce, economy and tourism were discussed during the meetings Cyprus President Nicos Anastiasiades had on Tuesday at the Parliament of Ireland.

    According to an official press release, Anastiasiades held separate meetings with the Chairman of the Lower House of the Parliament of Ireland Sean O Fearghail and the Chairman of the Senate Denis O'Donovan, at the Parliament building in Dublin. Special reference was made to the interest of Ireland in the Cyprus problem considering that Ireland is the third largest contributor to the Committee of Missing Persons in Cyprus, and is also one of the first countries that maintained a contingent in UNFICYP, the peacekeeping force in Cyprus.

    Cypriot MP Skevi Koukouma has stressed the need to reject austerity policies, as well as the need to change the EU direction, with a view to achieve social growth and cohesion.

    Speaking during a discussion on the reinforcement of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) social dimension, during a meeting of the Interparliamentary Conference on Stability, Economic Coordination and Governance in the EU, Koukouma underlined that the EMU has the achievement of fiscal discipline as its top priority and therefore, it can be said that it constitutes a tool to impose it.

    Referring to the will to achieve a more social Europe, Koukouma said there is lack of will by the EU and the Council to achieve this goal, noting that this is the case as regards powerful economic circles of the EU.

    The Government has included the reform of the pension system in its agenda as the low birth rate combined with the increase in life expectancy are expected to affect the public finances and the Social Insurance Fund, rendering necessary the strengthening of the second and third pension pillars, to secure additional retirement benefits that will adequately cover the citizens` needs, it was noted during a conference held Tuesday in Nicosia.

    The conference which was organized by the Federation of the Employers and Industrialists (OEB), discussed the challenges and prospects of the pension system in Cyprus.

    A series of measures were introduced in 2009 in view of the demographic problems faced by Cyprus, while additional measures were imposed by the Troika in December 2012, to ensure the viability of the Social Insurance Fund, Minister of Labour, Welfare and Soci ...
