Mr.Clerides felt discomfort in the last two days. The President will be out of hospital by midday Tuesday and will keep his normal appointments tomorrow. The spokesman said a week's rest is normally recommended following angiography and that the President was persuaded to postpone an official visit to China which was to begin on May 16th. President Clerides is 78 years old. [02] Canada's special envoy on his first visit to CyprusCanada's Special Representative for Cyprus Michael Bell, who has arrived on the island on a 3-day fact-finding mission, had talks with Foreign Minister Ioannis Kassoulides on Monday (12.5.97) after which he said he was "cautiously encouraged" that a solution to the Cyprus problem can be found and that Canada is willing to contribute any way it can towards that end.The Canadian Special Representative noted that the United Nations initiative on Cyprus "is the most important one" and that Canada continues to back it fully. Bell said he will held talks with UN Under-Secretary for Political Affairs, Sir Kieran Prendergast, after the latter's visit to Cyprus, which starts on Wednesday (14.5.97). Michael Bell was appointed on April 17th as the Canadian Foreign Minister's Special Representative for Cyprus. He also said: "I will be visiting Athens, Ankara, Brussels, London, Bonn and the Hague, and it will be the result of all those conversations that will determine if there is anything we can do during the process of negotiations or after the process when we hope to see an agreement". Mr. Bell added that he will be writing a report to his Foreign Minister at the end of his visits. [03] Government Spokesman on military overflightsGovernment Spokesman Manolis Christofides said on Monday (12.5.97) that the Cyprus government has noted there have not been any Turkish military aircraft violations of the island's airspace during the past few weeks and has welcomed the fact. "We welcome this development", he said during his daily press briefing.To a question whether there is an informal moratorium on flights by Greek and Turkish military airplanes over the island, the Spokesman said this is an issue on which the government took a unilateral decision. The decision related to a temporary ban on overflights by Greek military aircraft during army manoeuvres, while the UN-led proximity talks are taking place. "If the Turkish government decides to follow the same tactic as well, in a bid to display and create an atmosphere of goodwill, this is a matter that concerns that government", he added. "The government considered it right to establish this kind of climate during the talks and to make this (goodwill) gesture," he added.
