[01] Bicommunal concert a positive event, says US

US State Department Spokesman Nicholas Burns said yesterday that the bicommunal concert was "a very positive event", which drew the two communities together in a social setting.

"It is this kind of thing that has to happen if peace is going to occur on Cyprus. Sometimes it takes small steps like bringing people together for a concert", he said, expressing the hope that initiatives like this can help promote reconciliation between the communities in Cyprus.

Referring to civil disturbances in downtown Nicosia, Mr Burns said "We're pleased that authorities on both sides took their responsibilities to maintain civil order. They did not permit a small group of troublemakers from ruining the concert ".

"I think all countries in the region, as well as the Cypriot government, as well as the Turkish community would agree that if there's to be peace in Cyprus, normal people - people who are not government officials - need to meet each other", he stressed.

Mr Burns also said that the Greek and Turkish governments are now considering initiatives by the NATO Secretary General to diminish military tensions in the Aegean, a process that the United States fully supports. He added that the US also hoped that this can be a year where progress is made on Cyprus.

"It will require, of course, the good faith co-operation of both Turkey and Greece, working with the Cypriot government, with the Turkish community on Cyprus, to make that kind of progress that the people of Cyprus deserve after 22 years".

[02] UN Under Secretary General meets Greek Alternate Foreign Minister

The UN Under-Secretary-General Sir Kieran Prendergast met on 19.5.97 with the Greek Alternate Foreign Minister George Papandreou to discuss how a prospective Cyprus entry to the European Union could act positively on the problem of the division as well as on Greek-Turkish and European-Turkish relations.

[03] European Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy condemns Turkish occupation of Cyprus

A two day meeting of the International Secretariat of the European Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy (EIAO) hosted by the Cyprus House of Representatives ended in Nicosia yesterday with a resolution on the Cyprus problem condemning the continuing occupation and violation of human rights by Turkey on the island.

The EIAO members call upon Turkey to withdraw its troops and settlers from Cyprus and upon the UN Secretary-General to appoint the third member of the Investigatory Committee on the Missing.

The Nicosia meeting was held in order to prepare the ground for the EIAO's Fourth Annual Session scheduled next month in Halkidiki, Greece, and focused on the organisation's participation in celebrations for the completion of two thousand years of Christianity.
