Government Spokesman, Christos Stylianides, said yesterday that the government is investigating the incident. He said in such circumstances, "there will be strong protests to UNFICYP and relevant bodies abroad regarding the violation of specific rules of international law." Cyprus Defence Minister, Yiannakis Omirou also said Police and the National Guard are investigating the incident. Greek Government Spokesman, Demetris Reppas said the incident was part of the Turkish occupation forces' efforts to secure so called "state recognition", and an example of their aggression. The UN Secretary General's Acting Spokeswoman Marie Okabe in a statement yesterday referred to the incident during her daily briefing and said that the Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) "has strongly protested the use of force by the Turkish military, which it said could lead to tragic events". [02] Resolution on Cyprus approved by California SenateA resolution approved by the California Senate on August 17, calls on the US President and Congress "to continue their active support in finding a just, viable and lasting solution to the Cyprus problem within the United Nations framework".The resolution was proposed by Assemblyman Lou Papan who noted in a press release on August 24, that the Cyprus problem must end soon, adding that "the United States cannot allow the Turkish government to continue to stonewall any attempt at a resolution." He pointed out that the "Turkish government is already responsible for thousands of refugees on the island and countless human rights violations, we cannot allow them to make the situation even worse". Lou Papan who recently visited Cyprus, described the situation on the island as "very volatile", noting that the Cyprus government has recently purchased a missile system "for its own defence against the Turks". He warned that "if there is not a just settlement on the island very soon, the current hostility could easily expand, leading to international crisis." [03] Oinochoe and statue donated to Cyprus MuseumThe Leventis Foundation in accordance with its policy for the repatriation of important Cypriot antiquities which appear in antiquities' markets abroad, has purchased and donated to the Cyprus Museum in Nicosia an oinochoe with a representation of a bird on the shoulder and a limestone statue of a Kouros.According to the Department of Antiquities of the Ministry of Communications and Works, the oinochoe is of Bichrome IV ware with ovoid body, tall cylindrical neck, trefoil mouth , vertical handle and ring base and is dated to the Cypro-Archaic I period (750-600 B.C). The statue represents a young man in frontal position with the arms along the sides and with the left foot advanced, who is wearing the charachteristic Cypriot kilt. The statue is dated around 550 BC.
