[01] Britain supports sustained effort to make progress on Cyprus

Britain's envoy for Cyprus, Sir David Hannay arrived in Larnaca yesterday to attend a conference of Britain's ambassadors to Cyprus, Greece and Turkey, held on a regular basis.

Speaking on arrival at Larnaca airport, Sir David stressed the need for a sustained effort to help make progress "on both fronts identified in resolution 1218", namely the reduction of tension and a comprehensive Cyprus settlement.

Sir David also said that efforts will focus on the reduction of tensions and on the core issues of a comprehensive settlement, which are constitution, territory, refugees, compensation and security.

[02] Foreign diplomats present credentials

Hungary's new Ambassador to Cyprus Mr Istvan Pataki and New Zealand's new High Commissioner Mr Peter Robert Bennet presented yesterday their credentials to the President of the Republic Mr. Glafcos Clerides.

Presenting his credentials, Mr. Pataki stated that "Hungary has always supported a just and stable settlement of the Cyprus problem through the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions, "as well as international efforts aiming at bringing about a just, permanent and mutually acceptable solution based on international law and relevant UN resolutions".

"We consider that a comprehensive settlement should be based on a single, independent federative state comprising two politically equal communities, where the rights of all minorities are respected" he concluded.

On his part, the New Zealand High Commissioner to Cyprus Mr. Benett said that his country supports a solution to the Cyprus problem based on a bicommunal, bizonal federation in accordance with UN resolutions. Mr. Benett, who is appointed as his country's High Commissioner to Cyprus for the second time, said that "it is disappointing that there has been little substantive progress towards a resolution of the Cyprus question" in the nine years since his last accreditation to the island.

Mr. Benett also expressed the view that "the international community continues to have a vital role to play in facilitating a solution to the Cyprus problem".

[03] British MPs urge government to place the Cyprus problem high on the agenda

Four Conservative British MPs sent yesterday a letter to British Premier Tony Blair, expressing their appreciation for their government's positive response to President Clerides' decision not to deploy the S-300 missile system in Cyprus. In their letter, the British MPs also express the hope that Britain will take positive actions to ensure that the Cyprus government's decision in not wasted.

Moreover they stress the need for the British government to place the Cyprus issue high on its agenda, adding that "it would be very useful if pressure was exerted both by the EU and the United States of America on Turkey, to work towards a peaceful settlement in Cyprus".

[04] Cyprus- Spain sign road transports agreement

An agreement on road transports was signed yesterday in Madrid between the governments of Cyprus and Spain.

The agreement, which was signed by the Permanent Secretaries of the Ministries of Communications and Works of the two counties is expected to contribute in the strengthening of financial and commercial relations between Cyprus and Spain.
