Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 00-01-07Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>Friday, 7 January 2000[01]President Glafcos Clerides has said, "it is sad that unfounded information sees the light of day because this not only hinders the search for a solution to the Cyprus problem, but on the contrary creates confusion and bitterness in the people working towards one within the UN or foreign governments".In a statement he issued today President Clerides denied reports in the press that the United Nations have turned down the Greek Cypriot side's territorial proposals at the recent proximity talks on the Cyprus problem in New York. "The UN have recorded the proposal as they did with other proposals, without any comment", he said. He also said that it was equally untrue that the UN proposed that the Federal Republic of Cyprus would have a President and Prime Minister. "Mr Alvaro de Soto made no such proposal nor did he propose an equal division of power. He just recorded the positions of the Greek Cypriot side and the arguments on which these positions were based". President Clerides further denied that the US President's Special Envoy for Cyprus, Mr Al Moses, issued any comments or opinions regarding the proposals of the Greek Cypriot side, or that he made any suggestions or exerted any pressure regarding any aspect of the Cyprus problem. [02]The Cyprus government hopes that "the US interest on a settlement in Cyprus in the next critical months will move in the right direction and will reinforce efforts to implement UN decisions".Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou made the statement when asked to comment on US President Bill Clinton's report "A national Security Strategy for a New Century" which refers, among other things, to "building on hopeful developments between Greece and Turkey to make progress in the Aegean, particularly on Cyprus." Mr Papapetrou said "it is a fact that the US President has shown particular interest in the Cyprus problem, especially in the last few months and the inclusion of the Cyprus problem in the report was an indication of the continuation of this interest". He added that the efforts of the international community were concentrated on achieving a settlement before Cyprus' accession to the European Union if possible and this was also the desire of the Cyprus Government and that therefore the year 2002 could stand as a landmark date for the conclusion of these efforts. [03]Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides yesterday met with the leader of the Palestinian Authority Mr Yasser Arafat during which he was briefed on the progress in the Middle East peace talks while he in turn referred to the latest developments in the Cyprus problem.At a ceremony held before the meeting, Mr Arafat awarded Mr Kasoulides the Medal of the Order of "Bethlehem 2000". Mr Kasoulides was also awarded a medal by the Patriarch of Jerusalem Diodoros I. Mr Kasoulides is currently visiting Israel to attend the Orthodox celebrations for Christmas 2000. [04]The Ministry of Defence has denied as unfounded a report in the Egyptian newspaper Al Ahram claiming that secret talks were held between Israel, Cyprus and Greece on the strengthening of military cooperation and setting a date for the delivery of Israeli weapons.A statement by the Ministry of Defence on Wednesday stresses that "Cyprus maintains excellent relations with all countries in the region, is supplied with military material with transparent procedures and open international tenders, without excluding any country, which means of course it does not exclude Israel either. [05]The Council of Ministers on Wednesday approved a contribution of over ?18, 000 worth of pharmaceutical aid to Kirgistan.It also approved donations of $2000 each to two United Nations Funds for Indigenous People and to the United Nations International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women.
