[01] Cyprus can play the role of a euro-mediterranean bridge, says Israeli
Deputy Prime Minister
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Communications of Israel Mr. Benjamin
Ben Elieser said yesterday that Cyprus can become a bridge between Asia and
Europe and stressed that Israel takes a keen interest in developing
bilateral relations with Cyprus.
Mr Ben Elieser, who was speaking after a meeting with Cyprus Minister of
Communications and Works Mr. Averof Neofytou, added that the purpose of his
visit was to further examine the prospects of cooperation with Cyprus.
On his part, Mr. Neofytou said that the prospect of Cyprus' accession to
the EU offers new possibilities of cooperation to the two countries. Cyprus
can play the role of a euro-mediterranean bridge in the broader Middle East
region, and neighbouring Israel can come closer to Europe, he added.
In the light of this perspective, he said, Cyprus and Israel wish to
further strengthen their relations.
The Israeli Deputy Prime Minister was received earlier in the day by the
President of the Republic Mr. Glafcos Clerides and the President of the
House of Representatives Mr. Spyros Kyprianou.
