[01] European Parliament reaction to the arrest of Avrupa Journalists

The President of the Confederal Group of European United Left of the European Parliament Mr. Francis Wurtz, in letters to the President of the European Parliament Mrs Nicole Fontaine and to the High Representative of the European Union for Common Foreign and Security Policy Mr. Javier Solana, strongly protests against the arrest of the six journalists of the Turkish Cypriot newspaper Avrupa in the occupied area.

In his letters Mr. Wurtz states that he considers Turkey as responsible for this action and calls upon Mrs. Fontaine and Mr. Solana to use their influence with the Turkish government for their immediate release.

Moreover the President of the Joint EU - Cyprus Parliamentary Committee Mrs. Mechtild Rothe and the Vice President Mr. Constantinos Alisandrakis have circulated among the Members of the European Parliament, a written declaration condemning the arrest of the six journalists, which has already been signed by a number of MEPs.

[02] Cyprus Government protests to UN for Turkish violations

The Permanent Mission of Cyprus to the United Nations strongly protested to the UN Secretary General, against new violations of the flight information region of Nicosia (FIR) and the national airspace of the Republic by military aircraft of the Turkish Air Force, recorded on 7, 11, 12, 19, 21 and 29 June, as well as on 3 and 5 July 2000.

In a letter dated 10 July 2000 addressed to the Secretary General, Cyprus' Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Sotos Zackheos stressed that these actions by Turkey violate international law, as well as Security Council resolutions on Cyprus and called for their cessation.

He also expressed the hope that the necessary positive attitude would be shown by Turkey, so that the current proximity talks taking place under the Secretary General/s auspices, as well as all the efforts for finding a just and viable solution of the Cyprus problem, on the basis of United Nations resolutions, will not be adversely affected.

The letter circulated as an official document of the Security Council and the General Assembly.

[03] Presentation of credentials

The Cyprus Ambassador to Mexico Mr. Antonis Toumazis presented his credentials last Wednesday to the President of Guatemala Mr. Alfonso Portillo Cabrera, as Cyprus' new ambassador to Guatemala.

Receiving his credentials, the President of Guatemala assured him that his country will continue to strongly support Cyprus' territorial integrity and the Cypriot people's struggle for freedom.
